The founders of the Big Yaad both began their careers in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Jah Criss comes from the favela Campo Grande, which is synonymous with Big Yaad. He had at an early age a passion for drawing, which resulted in a career as a graphic designer. He is also founder of Rio de Janeiro first soundsystem DigitalDubs.
Jah Criss; “The Big Yaad project AIMS to inspire the younger generation in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, where the majority of the population HAS Afro-Brazilian roots, through sound system culture and art. My work reflects the history of the Africans taken to Brazil and it is deeply inspired by the impact the Jamaican culture had on my life and career.
Christa van den Heuvel, has been involved in exchange programs between Dutch and Brazilian artists. In 2009, the first screen printing studios were built in both Southeast Amsterdam and in Rio de Janeiro, where talented youth worked on the development of their own products.
De oprichters van het Big Yaad atelier zijn beide hun carrière begonnen in de favela’ s van Rio de Janeiro in Brazilië. Jah Criss is afkomstig uit de favela Campo Grande, wat synoniem staat voor Big Yaad.
Hij had al op jonge leeftijd een passie voor tekenen, wat resulteerde in een carrière als grafisch vormgever. Daarnaast is hij oprichter van Rio de Janeiro eerste soundsystem DigitalDubs.

Christa van den Heuvel, is al jaren betrokken bij uitwisselingsprojecten tussen Nederlandse en Braziliaanse kunstenaars. In 2009 werden de eerste zeefdrukateliers zowel in Amsterdam Zuidoost als in Rio de Janeiro opgebouwd, waar jong talent aan de ontwikkeling van hun eigen producten werkte.
