Bier & Brood, the Rotterdam artists Koen Harmsma and Jelmer Noordeman, can do anything with black and white. Inspired by machines, nature and architecture, they possess a unique style that outlines a dark, apocalyptic or ghastly reality. This is expressed in surrealist or psychedelic images. They enjoy working in black and white to give the viewer the feeling of being able to get lost within the work, with an occasional hidden joke as a reward. The title ‘Synthesis’ refers to the digitisation of society. Hands and ears are knotted together with the telephone, faces with screens. The work questions whether we are sinking into an Internet world, a phenomenon that is only 25 years old.
Bier & Brood, de Rotterdammers Koen Harmsma en Jelmer Noordeman, kunnen alles met zwart en wit. Geïnspireerd door machines, natuur en architectuur bezitten ze een unieke stijl die een duistere, apocalyptische of akelige realiteit schetst. Hun thematiek uit zich in surrealistische, dan wel psychedelische afbeeldingen. Ze werken graag in zwart en wit om de kijker het gevoel te geven te kunnen verdwalen in het werk, met soms een verstopte grap als beloning. De titel “Synthesis” gaat over de digitalisering van de samenleving. Handen en oren vergroeien met de telefoon, gezichten met beeldschermen. Het werk roept de vraag op of wij wegzakken in de wereld van internet; een realiteit die pas 25 jaar oud is.
